Hits of the Week

Recommended Posts

SO I'd like everyone's honest feedback on the weekly montage series Hits of the Week, now that 3 episodes have been released.

FYI you can watch them all here:

I'd like some honest feedback on how to improve the series and get more people to watch!

I'm enjoying the series.

The only thing I can think of to improve viewership is your Tags in the video. They are far too broad Example;

"call of duty, black ops iii, awakening, dlc, expansion, pack, survival"

They should be more like;

"call of duty awakening dlc, black ops awakening dlc, call of duty survival dlc"

Stuff along those lines. Things that you'd think people would actually search, "Call of Duty" is just going to either give you the Call of Duty channel or a channel with 1+ Million Subs that do Call of Duty for a living. You need to be more exact with the tags to get listings.

Another Example would be "KO, Gaming, Video, Game, Hits, of, the week," by doing this you're saying to YouTube if someone searches "K.O" your video should be related in some way. "Hits" "Of" "The" "Week"  Someone would actually have to search on YouTube "Hits" and shovel through millions of "Hits" videos to JUST to find yours.

Yes back in the day you could easily do separate words as tags and people would easily find you but YouTube changed that.

Hope this helps.

Most was good, but you should have put the spoilers in the end, or made like the thing where you click the timestamp to skip the segment. If it was there i did not see it. It is a farily long video so timestamps would be a good idea in general.

This sums up the feeling when I watch people play black ops

I almost missed the ending because of it. So yeah, timestamps would be my advice.

Spoilers in the end doesn't make sense. Why would he put spoilers in the end when the Undertale segment is in the middle?

He meant to move the Undertale segment to the last part of the video so that people know that everything ahead is just Undertale and that they don't watch the rest of the video if they don't want to get spoiled.

OK, I think I've gotten some pretty good advice here: try better tags, and add timestamps.

Timestamps work NOW but may be more challenging if I do a "running joke" of sorts where I use clips from the same game over the course of the entire video. But yeah, I don't think it'd be much of an issue to put timestamps for general segments covering different games; my only concern is putting TOO MUCH INFO in the vid description. Right now I've already got: my Amazon associate link, and links to all of the playlists for the games that are covered in the video, PLUS links to all of my channels/Patreon/etc. How many people are going to sift through ALL OF THAT for timestamps?

Thanks and please keep the feedback coming! I NEED IT to improve!

I think you can have timestamp in annotations as well. I have seen other youtubers use it to skip spoilers.

Timestamps is unnecessary for a 20 minute video imo. People can easily watch the whole thing. This isn't like the Hate Live podcast where it's 2 hours long.

Oh yeah, that can work too. Good one.

Time stamp for a 20 minute video? The whole point of Hits Of The Week is to watch the whole thing because we don't have time for the full playthroughs. Skipping the video kind of defeats the purpose lol.

There's nothing wrong with adding the option though. If someone only has time to watch 5 minutes of a video then facilitate that. Most of the most successful videos on Youtube are no longer than 5-6 minutes, and I think a big reason for that is that it's the most accessible to the highest number of people. Almost everyone has a spare 5 minutes at some point during the day. Not everyone has a spare 20.

Soooooo. That was short lived.

Hits of the Week takes 6-8 hours (yes, really) to put together. After doing it for a month straight, and putting in both Thursday/Friday nights into them for 4 weeks, views had dwindled into almost nothing (3k views on the last video within a week of producing it). Even the one I did for Street Fighter V, a hot new game, barely topped 4k views.

Compare that with vlogging, which takes less time and has REALLY taken off this year. Or reviews, which IMO are far more useful, take more thought, less time to produce, and I'd like to make them on a far more regular basis (because previously, they weren't consistent). BOTH of these have performed far better than Hits of the Week.

Combine ALL of that with the fact that the month of March has THREE Friday releases, meaning I wouldn't have time to do Hits of the Week anyway.

Performance speaks volumes. People are far more interested in vlogging, reviews, and gameplay than Hits of the Week. And considering it takes longer than anything else right now to produce, it's the last thing on my mind. Not making Hits of the Week right now is in direct response to what my viewers want, based on what they're watching. It's business 101.

If anything, what this has shown me is that ALL THOSE PEOPLE SCREAMING FOR EDITED/ABRIDGED CONTENT were full of shit. They weren't looking for that, at all; they just wanted to bitch that I was somehow "doing it wrong" but they weren't going to watch regardless. It's trolling at it's finest, and if you actually take a look at those complaining most about Hits of the Week not happening, it's them. They WANT ME TO WASTE MY TIME on something that nobody's watching, because they want to see my business fail. Fuck that, I'm not an idiot.

HOWEVER, for some upcoming major releases I may still do montages. Maybe "best KOs in Pokken Tournament" or "best moments of Quantum Break" or "most rage-filled deaths in Dark Souls III." The potential is there, but I'm not going to put in the massive time it takes when people are telling me they want other stuff more with their viewership.

Isn't it possible that the thousands of people who were asking for edited/abridged content are the same thousands of people who were watching the videos? You can do what you want of course, but ultimately, I believe you're discontinuing the series for your own reasons and not because of a conspiracy to waste your time. Just my 2 cents.

I think in italian sauce making terms you turned the heat on when starting the series but you didnt even let it simmer. You should of let it cook (give the series, time to develop. A month is nothing) stirred it up and added more ingredients (added more elements editing wise and more quality diverse content) and people would of enjoyed it. Right now your vlogging channel is riding on a fad, your tags and hot button clickbait topics/titles are generating the buzz, not necesarily you and the content. You should look at your analytics page to see how long people are actually engaged In the video, if most  of your viewers only watch half the video this fad isnt going to gain any momentum for you.

Im not really dissapointed to see the series go, im just agitated that im started to get use to series being discontinued quickly on this channel

@Vrifterexactly i was one of those 3k people. U know i guess he wants those 50k views from 2010-11 but unless he goes viral again thats Impossible. His core fanbase is 3k people.

It's possible that a lot of those people that wanted edited/abridged content just went somewhere else because for the longest time you were adamant about not doing it.

Well, that's a shame. I guess views still matter. :(

Kind of dumb to say, considering he makes his money with views.

With that said, I'm sad to see this series die and wish it wouldn't. I don't believe it was trolls who wanted this content because there are over 2k on each video, so at least that shows a good chunk of fans wanted it. I don't think there's some troll conspiracy at hand here.

I'm a fan of Phil, and I enjoyed the series. I got to see the good parts of his playthroughs that I wouldn't have watched all the way because I didn't enjoy the game.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Hits of the Week. But ask anyone on the planet Earth (who lives in the first world, mind you) if it makes sense to put in 6-8 hours of work into something and probably make $5, when you're trying to operate a successful business and need everything you do to have the best possible impact.

Hits of the Week would have made sense if the viewership GREW over the month I did it. It did the very opposite, showing that the majority of viewers didn't really care about that kind of video. I'm still going to do montages, but they're going to be more game-specific and when warranted; NOT weekly, and taking up 8+ hours of work time.

And for the record, I always said KOGaming would have 1-2 videos a week on there, which I've delivered. I have no idea why people made up unreasonable expectations for the channel. The channel very much ties into what I'm doing on DSPgaming; so if there aren't games to review/give impressions on, etc. (as in the case of a LONG ongoing playthrough like Zelda) then there's not going to be much to do on the channel. YES, countdowns are going to happen, but that will be during downtime and not long-form continuous playthroughs that last 37+ hours (again, Zelda) or when I'm trying to get as much gameplay in of something during a launch window (SFV) etc.

Not rocket science, and I didn't overpromise/underdeliver at all. But I can understand why some who DID like Hits of the Week are disappointed.
