Suggestions for upcoming King of Hate Forums rebrand.

Recommended Posts

I was on the old forums, it was basically the same as here. Trolls creating accounts daily to mess with DSP and his fanbase.

Phil deleted the topics and banned the users but the moderation staff at the time were naive and thought he was being too harsh or unfairly banning people, which led to an impasse where they refused to moderate for him unless he went through them first. The forums belonged to him however, it wasn't their call.

I remember one day a troll(@strickenguide or something?) on twitter was angry for being blocked by Phil, so he went on the forums and created an account. Phil blocked him there as well and the mods freaked out and all left. That was the last straw for them.

Then the forum got hacked and porn was posted all over, probably by one of the rogue mods but who knows.

It's a bit rich certain posters here who are rude to Phil, and have two accounts, are demanding rule changes left and right.

If you're referring to me, I no longer use the TraditionalGames account. All I wanted was a fresh start and Phil gave me permission. I would never operate two accounts at the same time to try to trick others.

But let's stop with the ad hominem attacks for a moment. Are you saying people SHOULD be allowed to harass, and dox others here? I don't think my input in regards to new rules was unreasonable.

If you're trying to insinuate the MoistCucumber and I are the same person, you'd be wrong. What would really make this place safer is fewer conspiracy theories.

YES!!!

YES!!!

You did trick them though. You only came out of closet when KF found out you was TraditionalGames.

You know what I meant. I said I would not pretend to be two different people at the same time. Enough with the lies. Also this has nothing to do with me and my past.

If you ban ppl the vote still counts. Quite a few of us are #dspositive.

Also you should make theanonymouse and/or ThatDogGuy mods, they've been good guys who keep this forum going with myself of course. Pretty sure they have squeaky clean status and keep a level head when shit blows up here.

Thank you thank you kind sir.

Only regular user of the forum who is mod ready is Sateler96, the rest of us are either drama queens or get sucked into the drama threads (I count myself as one of the latter group).

Make sure the forum re-branding only takes place after all the more relevant stuff on the main site is fixed first. In addition to the improvements there, a "random playthrough" function would be a decent addition for selecting a single playlist for someone to check out.

As for the forums themselves:

1) Have clear cut and defined rules that are enforced universally for all members regardless of their status level.

2) Do not add moderators. The forums don't have an activity level that necessitates more oversight than they already have.

3) Reduce the number of threads that are deleted entirely. Locking threads and/or full on deletions of entire threads instead of just posts is too frequent.

That's not true at all. Whenever a detractor make an account and starts spamming insults to people it typically takes several hours for a mod to come online. I believe the two mods are in the UK (Correct me if I'm wrong)? So it might be wise to have a mod in Australia or the US.

Even if you were to have a couple extra mods in more time zones, that doesn't mean they will be available to look over the forums at all times.

The thing about the forums is that the engagement rate is low so when a troll spams posts, you can't even be sure that people are even seeing it. There is a big contrast between someone spamming in a stream chat (where user engagement is relatively high) and a forum where there are a few handfuls of users. The spamming here doesn't tend to disturb discussion that much, at least not anymore than the ridiculous stuff some regulars post as well. Another mod or two isn't going to change much or matter and they'd be completely superfluous.

Going to say again that this forum needs an approval process for new members. That would be easier to manage than the mods having to clean up all these troll accounts every day.

You would literally be making their work easier.

Some websites like twitter would require that you use a phone number to prove your identity.

How exactly do we "approve" members without making it a closed community?

I understand the concern but you would have to go about it in the right way. There must be a balance struck between making sure there aren't people trolling on here but at the same time you don't want to drive away new viewers

I posted one suggestion already in my last comment, which is that people need to authenticate with a phone number to prove their identity.

Plenty of other forums are already doing it properly so there's no reason it won't work here. Resetera used to require a paid email address.

This forum NEEDS it.

Forum can still be public but posting requires you to prove you're a legit member, Resetera being the same example I'm going to use again.

So you're telling me that I wouldn't be able to join the forums because I use gmail/yahoo which are the most common emails? Or that I need to give the forums my private information which can get leaked if the forums get hacked? No! This would destroy the forums.

This forum isn't any different than others that require it. This forum has never been hacked outside of a few rogue mods and I'm not suggesting the mods would have access to that data anyway. If you pay for anything over the internet then you really don't have an argument.

Perhaps you could post suggestions instead of, "I don't want it," because this is something we actually need put in place.

after what happened earlier this year i think that security and personal information is a definite concern. A possible improvement that could be made is expanding the reporting options on the forum i think that a lot of people here are good at spotting trolls and detractors - making reports more specific and possibly auto restricting users if they have had multiple reports within a short period of time could lighten the load on moderators and help to deal with people more quickly

No. We don't need this. What we need is for moderators to enforce the rules. And in order to do that we need at least a couple of new mods who can respond to trolls faster.

The forum isn't big enough to require more mods, it's a tiny forum with a simple troll problem that could be addressed very easily with better board security.

i dont really see how what you are suggesting is really going to help nowadays on the internet it is very easy to spoof a  number for verification purposes almost as easy as spoofing and email address. A lot of these detractors and trolls are very persistent and i don't think that the things you are suggesting are fool proof, sure it may discourage some but im pretty sure the problem will continue even after implementing something like that

How can anyone argue with this. It's very easy to get access to this forum and I received some shitty DM's from sock accounts today. We don't need this.

Then report them. It's not hard.

You guys seem to forget that you also joined this forum as a new member at some point. How would you like it if you were rejected because everyone said "We don't know you"

The point is that's life. You can't get rid of trolls without turning the forums into an elitist club which is just as bad.
